The time is April 1920, and the winter ice in the LaHave River is breaking up and flowing downstream to the
open ocean.
Across the river in Riverport, the schooner fleet is still held captive in their cove, and the community is settling in for
another cold night.
Midstream, on the deep and icy waters of the LaHave, the barkentine, Ruby E. Gray, has been caught by the flow ice, and is turned “beam to”. Before the crushing force of thousands of tons of ice can “stove in” her sides, the Captain and crew have taken to the ice to try to free the barkentine
